Cermaq is a world leading salmon farming company. We have a team of more than 3500 employees across Chile, Canada, US, and Norway committed and proud to grow superior seafood for a global market.

Do you want to play a key role in tackling global challenges in the salmon industry?

We might not be completely impartial when we say that we believe this is an exciting opportunity. Whether or not this is true for you, is up to you to decide. That’s why it’s essential for us to provide you with as much insight into the role as possible. However, as we don’t want to use far too much of your time, we’ll try to keep it short.

What’s the job all about?

  • As a Researcher Fish Health (RFH) at Cermaq Group, you are a key player in tackling the big challenges in the global salmon industry. You are a part of the Fish Health team supporting our Operational Companies (OpCo’s) in Norway, Chile, and Canada. The team's job is to keep the fish across our facilities healthy and happy, and we have a wide range of tasks and projects such as vaccine development, agent tracking, biosecurity, antibiotic resistance tracking, welfare measurement and consultancy.
  • You are responsible for diving into research findings and sharing them within our organization. You write reports and publish your findings in scientific journals. You also give advice, which is a big part of what we do both internally and externally. Sometimes, you share our results outside the organization through reports or presentations at conferences.

  • Your role involves participating in the planning and execution of both large and small research projects. You understand that deep commitment to fish health and animal welfare is essential to succeed in this role and you are engaged and curious in the close collaboration with our OpCo’s, external research partners and the supplier industry so that the projects create value. As RFH you have an operational understanding and a practical approach as you provide support and advisory to our OpCo’s and embrace the importance of building relations and great collaboration.

Lab & Field Work

  • A part of your day can include lab and fieldwork. In the lab, you'll do things like collect samples and use cool techniques like qPCR, PCR, sequencing, bacteriology, and histology. In the field, you'll collect samples from fish and the environment, which directly contributes to our research efforts. In the field you are collecting fish and environmental samples, as well as presenting results to our clients and participating in project meetings. You work with issues in all our production areas from Punta Arenas in southern Chile to Hammerfest in northern Norway, and sometimes you travel there.

The Team & Everyday work

  • As RFH you are a part of, and an important contributor to, our Fish Health team where our R&D Manager, Henrik, is your leader. You mainly manage your own working day based on your responsibilities, tasks, deliveries, and appointments. You are used to, and enjoy working independently, but always with the team as the focus. You understand the importance of structure and details in combination with a service-minded approach to both hands-on and back-office tasks and you take great pride in delivering high quality.
  • To succeed in the everyday work and overall goals in this role we see that you are a trained fish health biologist or veterinarian. If you have experience in laboratory work, diagnostics, and field sampling that is highly valued, and completion of animal experimentation courses are a plus.
  • As we operate on an international level and are lucky enough to collaborate with people from different parts of the world, you are fluent in written and spoken English. You are also fluent in Norwegian, and if you also happen you speak Spanish, that’s great. You will mainly work at our office in Bergen (located at UiB) and although we aim to use Teams as often as possible, you are prepared to travel and have a drivers license.

A short intro of the organization:

Cermaq is divided into Group and the Operating Companies which are in Chile, Canada, and Norway. Cermaq Group consists of 42 employees in Oslo and Bergen working with global functions like Finance, Communication, Sustainability, Global IT, Legal, Fish Health, Innovation and HR.

Does this sound like a job where you would thrive like a fish in water?

If the answer is yes, then we encourage you to send us your CV and application! Recognizing that crafting an application letter can be time-consuming and challenging, here are key points that reflect our priorities and what we would like to know about you.

A short introduction of yourself is a good starting point, but above all, we want to know what you have learned and experiences from what you mention in your CV, or perhaps other aspects of life.

  • Can you give an example of a time when you delivered high-quality work through structured and detail-oriented work? Briefly describe your approach and the outcomes.
  • Can you share an experience from a project where you collaborated with others to achieve a common goal? Briefly describe how you contributed to the project's success.
  • Can you give an example of a time when you ensured effective communication? Briefly describe your approach and the result.

Some practical information:

The recruitment process: We will review applications and get in touch with relevant candidates on an ongoing basis. The first step will be a short introduction where we get to know each other a bit better, and you get more information about the process moving on.

We encourage both graduates and more experienced candidates to apply. A doctorate is no obstacle, but neither is it a requirement.

Application deadline: You can apply until 22.11.23, but the sooner the better.

Startup: What matters most is ensuring this opportunity aligns with your aspirations and that we see that there is a foundation for a productive collaboration. Therefore, we are relatively flexible when it comes to the start date. Having that said, there is a lot of exciting things happening these days, and we must admit that we would like the right candidate to join us as soon as possible.

What now?

We hope that the information you received here has been helpful in your process of sending us your application. If you have any further questions, feel free to get in touch! You can find contact information in the ad. Otherwise, just hit “apply”.
